Sandee Sez: Christmas is about giving, being kind & helpful
- Sandra Ahenakew | December 20, 2015
Once again, we come to the Holiday Season, a deeply religious time that each of us observes, in our own way, by going to the mall of our choice.
If you’re like me you probably have a few people on your list who are hard to buy for…you know the ones who already have everything. Christmas shopping can be a nightmare. The stores are filled with bargain hunting bullies who will run you over to save a buck or grab the last IPad on the shelf.
In my opinion, kids get too many presents but there’s not much we can do about; we have all given into peer pressure and have succumbed to brainwashing and expensive advertising campaigns. Buy, buy, and buy some more or maybe it’s that we are too soft to say no.
If you ask me the malls are the only place where Christmas is allowed. The schools boards have taken Christmas out of schools; no more Christmas concerts with children singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it Christmas and went to church. These days, people say “Seasons Greetings” which when you think about it means nothing, but it’s safe because it does not refer to any actual religion. I suspect that someday even “Seasons Greetings” will be considered too religious and we’ll celebrate the holiday season by saying, Have a nice day”.
But for now let us remember that this time of year is when we think about family traditions and remember stories from Christmas’ past. Set your phone to record and start documenting your time together.
Traditionally Christmas is a time of year for families to get together and be nice to each other. Unfortunately we don’t always get to spend time with everyone we would like to because sometimes they live too far away or we can’t afford to travel. Sometimes our loved ones are in the hospital or they are in heaven.
Although we can’t bring back loved ones maybe you can include them in some way to help lift your spirits. Some families set an extra plate at the dinner table and remember them in their prayers.
Make time for family and friends throughout the year, rather than making too much fuss for the one or two days in December. Spend time together when you can and remember to tell those close to you that you love them.
Share pictures and videos and include your loved ones in your life in as many ways as possible.
Remember that Christmas is about giving, but it’s also about being kind and helpful. Start a new tradition this year and give everyone you meet a random act of kindness. The most precious gift we can give anyone is our time. It doesn’t matter what is under your Christmas tree but rather who is around the tree. Tapew.
Wherever you are, whatever you do and whoever you are with…have a great time. May the Creator Bless you and your family. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Seasons Greetings and have a nice day.
