Executed on November 16th by the Canadian government under the guise of a treason conviction, Louis Riel will be remembered as the founder of Manitoba, a Father of Confederation, and the passionate and brilliant leader of the Métis. A champion of rights and land rights for the people of the northwest, he was smeared and feared by the leaders of the east as he interrupted their march for land in the west.
Now resting peacefully near his birthplace in St. Boniface, Métis and Canadians take pause on November 16th to remember his legacy and commemorate his life. Activities are talking place across the homeland. Saskatchewan Polytechnic will fly the Métis flag at their four main campuses in recognition of Louis Riel Memorial Day.
If you are interested in a fascinating conversation between two brilliant Métis women, check out https://www.facebook.com/gabrieldumontinstitute to see Marilyn Poitras and Maria Campbell discuss Riel, “his life, his roots, his writing, his faith”. Captivating! Or maybe you are going down to the Gabriel Dumont Statue in Saskatoon’s Friendship Park for the annual short ceremony and placing of a sash on Gabriel.
Whatever it is you are doing, keep in mind the price Louis Riel paid for his dedication to his people and be grateful for the sacrifice as we appreciate the benefits and organizations and leaders we have today.
