Fitness Tips from Fitness 2J2: Functional Fitness and Running Programs from LaRonge to Saskatoon
- Joel Pedersen | April 12, 2019
This past month we brought Functional Fitness and 2J2 Running programming to the LaRonge community. Community Co-ordinator Ashley Roberts did an awesome job of organizing through the Gordon Denny community school. It was a full week of functional fitness with the students during the day, and evening sessions with the community. Grateful for the extra hard effort put in by everyone who attended the fitness sessions. Our last day was capped off with a Fun Run/Walk; the young runners from Grade 1 to Grade 8, some ran over 3km, all stayed active for their 45min sessions.
This visit to community was slightly different, as we had running shoes to gift for those who could really use a pair, at no cost. The running shoes for community were provided by: Tarrant, Brian and Colin from BrainSport in Saskatoon. It was a great opportunity for everyone to be active, and the smiles on the faces of kids when they realized the shoes were now theirs was priceless.
Also this month no cost programming in Saskatoon continued with our 2J2 co-ed BootCamps; Self Def for women and youth; Learn to run 5km; and women and girls BootCamp. Also wrapped up the three-week Self-Def program for women offered at the UofS college of Kinesiology PAC. It’s been a busy spring and we are looking forward to 2J2 youth learn to do Tri-Athlon, this will be our fourth year of this program for youth from six years to fourteen years of age.
Living a healthy and positive lifestyle includes physical activity that links into mental health. The activity can be a sport, recreation or anything that gets you moving, that can also bring you some joy. For some of us this can be challenging, some barriers can be social or economical; others could be physical or emotional. What I have learned over the past few years of traveling and visiting communities is there is interest in changing lifestyles. In every community there are some, who can see the benefit, how it can open opportunities, it can bring hope.
The first part is engagement, brining something new then learning some of what it takes to keep programming going and fresh, setting some goals and creating vision. To make the right choices when others may not be watching, promote and celebrate success of others. The next is sustainment, keeping motivated and empowering others around you to participate, to inspire more people to join you. To find the balance of family, community and self takes time, it is part of your journey for healthy and positive lifestyle. We are here for you when you are ready.
