Louis Riel Relay Days at Batoche National Historic Site
- EFN Staff | April 04, 2016
Friends of Batoche Historic Site is pleased to announce a new weekend activity for the whole family taking place this summer at the Batoche National Historic Site. Louis Riel Relay Days will take place on Saturday, August 20 & Sunday, August 21.
In a kickoff event to announce the project, Friends of Batoche Chairperson, Louise Tournier said, “the Batoche National Historic Site has such great history that needs to be told over and over and in many different forums to be truly appreciated. Together with our proud partner the Gabriel Dumont Institute we are able to bring guests to the park to re-live the important elements of our ancestors. This event is a great way to do this in a fun, festive, and sociable way.”
The weekend feature is a competitive relay event. This activity brings back the essence of the original Saskatchewan Louis Riel Relay that took place along the Saskatoon riverbank for many years through the 1970s, 80s & 90s. The Batoche relay will have multi-participant teams competing in succession in six events – running, biking, hill hiking, canoeing, horseback riding and archery.
Participants must register in advance. Registrations are available on-line. All relay activities will also be open to event guests to try at their leisure.
Other weekend activities will include an individual adventure race, 5km fun run, eating contest, bannock making, site tours, and other traditional Metis activities. Saturday evening will feature an outdoor concert with Canadian country music’s biggest stars and a Great Western Original 16 beer gardens.
