Today we honor a man who meant the world to us. It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Lawrence Joseph Crookedneck, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan at the age of 82 years.

Lawrence was born on October 12, 1943, to Robert and Maggie Crookedneck (née Pahtayken). Raised in Ministikwan, he learned the values of family, hard work, respect, and community that guided him throughout his life. He attended school in Whelan, Saskatchewan, where he formed lifelong friendships and the foundation for the man he would become.

At just 19 years old, Lawrence met the love of his life, Nancy, at a Round Dance. She was 16, and from that evening began a lifelong journey together. Through life’s joys and hardships, they chose one another every day, building a marriage rooted in love, loyalty, forgiveness, and unwavering commitment.

Together they built a family that became Lawrence’s greatest pride. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nancy Crookedneck, and his children Donna (Dean), Dwayne, Marilyn, Shonna, Keith (Elaine), Clem (Tammy), and Darryl; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings Ronnie (Pauline), Violet, Elmer, and Leslie (Colleen); sister-in-law Marlene.

He was predeceased by his cherished children Shelly Wapass, Vera Ernest, and Olivia Ernest, and by his beloved grandchildren Leah Alexan, Shania Vincent, Ayesha Ernest, Jaylynn, and Simon Ernest; numerous great-grandchildren; parents Robert and Maggie Crookedneck; siblings Maria (Peter), Madeline, Rema and Roy.

Lawrence was a hardworking man who believed that providing for his family always came first. A skilled carpenter by trade, he never shied away from long hours or hard work. In their early years together, he and Nancy travelled and worked on farms while raising their young family, taking every opportunity to build a better future. He later spent many years working throughout southern Alberta, earning the respect of coworkers through his dedication, integrity, and willingness to lend a helping hand.

To his children, Lawrence was a devoted father whose discipline was always rooted in love. As they grew older, they came to understand that every lesson he taught was meant to help them become strong, respectful, and compassionate people.

Some of their fondest memories were the family trips he and Nancy made possible. Whether travelling to the Rocky Mountains, attending fairs, visiting family, or simply spending time together, Lawrence believed life’s greatest treasures were the memories created with those you love.

Lawrence proudly served his people as both Councilor and Chief. He believed leadership meant serving others with honesty, humility, and compassion, earning the respect of his community through his dedication and genuine care for others.

He had a lifelong passion for horse racing and was proud to be part of the Ace Racing Team. He was also a proud member of the Cowboy Round Dance Society, where he cherished the fellowship, music, and traditions that celebrated community and culture. A devoted Edmonton Oilers fan, Lawrence was rarely seen without his signature white cowboy hat. His warm smile, sense of humour, and gift for conversation meant few strangers stayed strangers for long.

Family was at the heart of everything Lawrence did. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the greatest joy of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them. He also held a special place in his heart for his many nieces and nephews, loving them as if they were his own. His home and heart were always open, and he generously shared his time, wisdom, laughter, and love with everyone who crossed his path.

More than any title or accomplishment, Lawrence’s greatest legacy is the family he and Nancy built together. His love lives on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and the countless lives he touched.

Dad, thank you for your strength, guidance, sacrifices, laughter, and unconditional love. Thank you for every lesson, every adventure, and every memory. We are who we are because of you, and we will carry your love and your legacy with us always.

Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing your suffering has ended and that you are finally at peace. Your love, wisdom, and example will continue to guide us for generations to come.

Lawrence’s Wake will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the Ministikwan School Gymnasium, Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan.

The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Ministikwan School Gymnasium, Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan.
