On Thursday, May 1, 2025 Joseph “Steve” Morningchild passed away in Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, SK at the age of 74 years.

“Steve was very knowledgeable about his culture. He was a mentor to many, and people looked up to him. Many came to him for his teachings and help with traditional ceremonies. He loved and kept his culture close to him until he departed from this world. He raised many children with his beloved wife, Georgina. They traveled far and wide to ceremonies with all their kids over the years. He loved to go across to his hunting grounds to snare and hunt; it was his favorite pastime. He also loved birch bark making and bingo. The most important thing to him was helping with traditional ceremonies; he cherished his culture. He loved spending time with his family and being at home, where he raised his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids with the love of his life, Georgina, in their beautiful home in Goose Lake.”

Steve is forever loved and remembered by his Brother Rene Morningchild; Son Steven Turner; Grandsons Joey Waterhen, Francis (Barb) Morningchild, and Sonny Morningchild; Granddaughters Amber Waterhen, Stephanie Waterhen, Shentelle Waterhen, and Alyssa Morningchild; Great-Grandchildren Josie, Nikita, Noella, Savannah, Fayelynn, Allayah, Alisha, Aaron, Cody, Owen, Keadon, Brielle, Zaidee, Logan, Ember, Daelyn, and Gabriel; as well as numerous extended family and friends.

He was predeceased by his Mother Theressa Morningchild; Father Johnson Morningchild; Beloved Wife Georgina Lonechild; Sisters Lena and Maryanne; Brothers Francis, Gabriel, Henry, Mervin, Elmer, and Bernie; Children Calinda and Calvin Waterhen, Noella Faye Ratfoot; Nephew Shoshone; Gransons Calvin Jr.; Great-Grandson Joseph Jr.
