"Hard work pays off. You might fall, but if you pull yourself back up, you can achieve anything."
Hometown: Pasqua First Nation, SK
Program: Automotive Service Technician
Daniel Missens knows hardship. He has suffered poverty, broken homes, legal problems and the early passing of some of the most important people in his life. But that hasn't stopped him from bettering himself through education; in fact, he says his past has motivated him.
"I finally tired of all of the negativity in my life and decided to make a change. I went back to school because my uncle encouraged me, and I wanted to complete the dream of attaining journeyperson status. Since then, I have never looked back."
Missens completed his automotive service technician apprenticeship training at SIAST and now has been employed at Regina Mazda as an Automotive Service Technician for five years. He finds the work satisfying: "I enjoy working with my hands. The job is both challenging and rewarding."
"My main support during school is my wife and children," he explains, adding that "good training means more money for a better life for my family. I want to be someone my kids look up to and can depend on."
