Construction Underway for Affordable Housing for NORTEP Students
- EFN Staff | December 06, 2013
Construction is underway for new housing for Northern Teacher Education Program (NORTEP) students in La Ronge.
Federal and provincial governments are providing funding for the $2.6 million project. Each is providing $884,000.
The other four units are funded through Saskatchewan Housing Corporations Summit Action Fund, with an investment of $500,000. The balance of the project cost comes from cash/land equity and mortgage financing. Located at the corner of Bedford Drive and Louis Road, the project consists of six four-bedroom and two five-bedroom units.
The eight units are designed for students with large families who are furthering their education in La Ronge.
"Northern students, and in particular young Aboriginal people, face considerable barriers when it comes to succeeding in university," says NORTEP President and CEO herman Michell. "Many come from communities where lack of housing is a huge problem. They need quality places in which to live and study."
Michell says this partnership with the two levels of government means students can make education their priority.
"Affordable accommodation will enable students to focus successfully on completing their university studies."
The project is estimated to be completed in April 2014.
