As part of our coverage of the 2015 Federal Election, we are asking Indigenous people in this province to tell us “Why I Vote.” These are the unedited words from our interviewees. You can find more in our

Interviews section

.

John Lagimodiere, 47, Publisher and consultant

Did
you vote in the last federal election?

I have voted
in every election I have been entitled to except one where I got caught
up out of town and missed the poll closing. I was so upset.

Will you be voting in this election?

I will certainly be voting in this election.

What
is the most important issue to you this election?

First Nation, Métis
and Inuit issues are most important because that is where we need the
most investment and change in our country. After that, I look at
taxation, healthcare and education for middle class families like mine
as we need to survive and thrive in this country and the day to day
stuff impacts our family the most.

Why
is it important for Indigenous people to vote?

It is important to vote
because you can influence change and it is your civic responsibility. If
you don’t vote, politicians won’t pay attention to your issues. Get
engaged. Make an effort or quit yer bitchin.
