It is with heavy hearts that we have to say goodbye to our Dad, Papa, Chapan, Brother, Mentor, and Friend. A man whose strength, knowledge, and unwavering spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Leon was truly a jack of all trades. He could fix cars, do carpentry work, harvest wild rice, set nets, and was good with a gun especially target shooting (at moose). He knew our traditional lands and how to utilize Mother Earth to her fullest. His cooking, and the many dishes he would make, were deliciously memorable. The dry meat will never taste the same and his pots of duck soup will never be matched.

His sense of humor was like no other. If you knew him, there was a layer of crust. But if you KNEW him, you knew that was a very thin layer 🥰. Living an active life right up to his last days, Leon found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved driving, even if it meant jumping in his truck for Chinese food in Pierceland. He was an avid traditional hunter and fisherman who found peace on the land and water, and he carried a lifelong passion for the game of golf. His golfing buddies, along with his crew on Gossip Row, quickly became much more than friends—they became his respected “Chums.” He called you “Chum” if he liked you or “Chucksees” if he didn’t know or remember your name. Both were always said with humor and endearment. Whether sharing stories over coffee or enjoying a round on the golf course, Leon treasured the laughter and companionship they shared.

Deeply proud of his culture, Leon embraced and lived the traditional ways of life. He believed that these teachings were gifts to be shared, and he dedicated countless hours mentoring the younger generations. Through patience, wisdom, and example, he encouraged youth to remain connected to their heritage and traditions. He took great pride in passing on this knowledge, and his young “Chums” eagerly looked forward to learning alongside him.

Above all else, Leon’s greatest love was his family. He cherished each member deeply and found immense joy in spending time with them. He shared an especially close bond with his grandchildren he helped raise, Kihisis Derocher, Krysandra Derocher, and Dallynn Tootoosis. He also held a very special place in his heart for his Chapan, Knighton. The love, guidance, and unwavering support he gave them will remain with them forever.

Leon had an extraordinary gift for making friends wherever he went. Even during his hospital stay, his charming personality and sense of humour quickly turned caregivers into “Chums.” A heartfelt thank you to the Flying Dust Nurses. The compassionate care and friendship shown by Amber, Lindsay, Deanne, Lynda, and the in-hospital nurses, Princess and Jarrett will be remembered for a lifetime.

Leon is survived by his Spouse Lorraine Derocher; Children: Clayton Matchee, Greg Matchee, Pamela (Greg) Berg, Maria Matchee, Marie Rose Matchee, Charles Matchee, Tammy (Randy) Wigton, Travis (Heather) McCallum, Iris “Nootch” Derocher, and Wayne Iron (Marilyn); Brothers: Mervin Matchee and Roy Carter. Sister Linda Matchee; numerous Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Leon is predeceased by his Parents: Stanley & Helen Matchee; Brothers: JB, Joe, William, and Victor; Son: Lawrence “Lalas” Matchee; Daughter Mary Matchee; Wife Celine Matchee.

Leon’s Wake will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at the Flying Dust Gymnasium, Flying Dust First Nation, Saskatchewan.

The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Flying Dust Gymnasium, Flying Dust First Nation, Saskatchewan.
