On the heels of opening their Ma Faamii Centre in Prince Albert last week, the Métis Nation- Saskatchewan (MNS) have opened another new facility in the province. Comparably to their Prince Albert facility, the new Centre in Saskatoon is opening doors for a young generation.

“As a mom and a grandmother, I can honestly say I wish something like this had existed when my own children were young,” said MN-S Vice President Michelle LeClair. “To see our children surrounded by Métis culture, identity, and traditions from such a young age is something very special.”

On October 6, the MN-S held their grand opening for their new Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Centre, located in the residential neighbourhood of Kensington in Saskatoon.

The new 90-space childcare centre is set in a 14,370 square foot building designed by Métis architect Jason Hurd. According to the MN-S, the building provides endless training opportunities for Métis educators while allowing children to explore their Métis traditions and values.

“I’m incredibly proud that Métis families now have a place where their children can learn, grow, and know who they are,” said LeClair.

According to a provincial government report, Saskatchewan has approximately 41,000 operational licensed child care spaces as of early 2026. The province had originally targeted creating 46,000 spaces.

Roughly 47 percent of Saskatchewan children under six years-old are in parental care only, while only about 25 percent of of children under six are in centre-based care or pre-school, according to a Cardus report.

Brooke Cross-Worobec, a student and mother of a young child in Saskatoon, said being able to take her son to a culturally-grounded centre has been comforting while attending class.

“Just to know he’s being raised with other Métis children is super important. He’s only one-and-a-half years-old. It’s a safe space and it’s grounded in wholistic teachings that include plenty of activities for the kids,” said Cross-Worobec.

The grand opening for the childcare centre took place on October 6, while the facility has been quietly open since July

The MN-S had their soft opening for the ELCC this past July. According to a press release, they have been able to accommodate a mother who was on a three-year waiting list for childcare.

The Saskatoon ELCC daycare centre is one of three to be built by the MN-S in the province. The Prince Albert location opened in September, and the ground has been blessed at the future Regina location.

“Every parent deserves to see their children raised in a safe and affordable environment,” said MN-S ELCC Minister Ryan Carriere.

“MN-S is making that happen with a culturally grounded, fully-licensed care centre that allows Métis children to grow up with Métis traditions and parents to pursue meaningful employment opportunities that help create a more successful home life.”
