Events around the province to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day

First celebrated in 1996, National Indigenous Peoples Day is a holiday celebrated on June 21 which recognizes the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people. Around the province, the following events are planned in celebration:

SASKATOON

Rock Your Roots Walk for Reconciliation – Friday June 19, 10:00AM – 1:00PM

Victoria Park

-This annual walk honours Residential School Survivors and supports Truth and Reconciliation. It includes a community barbecue, birthday celebrations for Survivors, and afternoon entertainment.

Powwow People” Community Screening – Friday June 19, 7:00PM

Remail Modern

– a free community screening and Saskatchewan premiere of “Powwow People” with director Sky Hopinka in attendance.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park – Sunday June 21, 10:00AM – 4:00PM

Wanuskewin Heritage Park

-A full day of Northern Plains Indigenous cultural programming including dance and drum presentations, bannock baking, plant walks, and guest speakers.

REGINA

National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration – Friday June 19, 10:00AM – 1:00PM

Victoria Park

– Celebrations include a grand entry, live performances, artisan markets and crafts, and educational experiences including a tipi demonstration

PRINCE ALBERT

– a free, family-friendly event featuring an artisan market, cultural programming, powwows, jig dancing, and a community lunch and dinner.
