The former Moose Jaw Events Centre will now dawn a new name – the Temple Gardens Centre.

A result of a new five-year, naming-rights deal recently inked between the City of Moose Jaw and Peepeekisis Developments Limited worth $600,000. The First Nations group also owns Temple Gardens Hotel and Spa in downtown Moose Jaw.

Peepeekisis Cree Nation Chief Frank Deiter said his community is excited about the new relationship with Moose Jaw. The First Nation is about 180 kilometres northeast of the city.

“The city has warmly welcomed us and demonstrated that Reconciliation is a priority,” said Deiter.

“Our Nation enjoys being part of the community, and we hope to contribute to economic development in meaningful ways,” said Dieter.

The new Temple Gardens Centre brand was unveiled during a special ceremony at the arena before a game between the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Red Deer Rebels.

“The Temple Gardens name has been associated with entertainment and tourism in downtown Moose Jaw for over 100 years,” said Mayor James Murdock. “We’re thrilled to see that association continue with the naming of Temple Gardens Centre.”

In the five-year contract, PDL will contribute $120,000 annually for $600,000 in total. The arena has not had a naming partner since 2022, when the Mosaic Company declined to renew their 10-year agreement.

The city of Moose Jaw will spend up to $40,000 to install new signs throughout the building, with any additional signage costs covered by PDL.

“Since PDL purchased the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa over two years ago, the city and the people of Moose Jaw have been very welcoming and accepting of us into their community,” said Allan Bird, PDL Chairman and Nation Headman. “Our nation hopes to continue strengthening our relationship with the city and it’s people, helping build a community where everyone is welcomed.”

Both representatives from the City of Moose Jaw and Peepeekisis expressed aspirations to work on future projects and attract additional funding to strengthen Moose Jaw’s economy.

Chief Dieter said improving infrastructure, creating new jobs, and supporting population growth are a few of the ways PDL and the city can work together.

He said the next goal is working towards one day owning and operated the casino in Moose Jaw.
