Anniversary program arms babies with books

North West Regional College has announced its Born to Read Program to celebrate the College’s 40 years of service in Northwest Saskatchewan. The College partnered with Prairie North Health Region to resurrect a program initiated in the 90's called Born to Read.
The premise of the Born to Read program is providing a board book and accompanying bag to every baby born in the North West Regional College’s region in 2015. This would include babies born in the hospitals in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake. The program supports the importance of literacy in the home and the benefits that derive for both the caregiver and the child.
President & CEO Tavia Laliberte of North West Regional College said, “We are excited to support the next generation of creative thinkers and provide them with resources to help develop their minds.”
Speaking on behalf of all staff members of the Women’s Health and Birthing Unit at the Battlefords Union Hospital, Nurse Manager Pamela Plummer said, “This initiative will give parents and families access to books and enable them to start reading to their children at an early age.” Plummer added, “The staff of the Unit appreciates this partnership and is delighted to give our patients and their families these books in promotion of early learning”.
Families with new babies born in 2015 will receive the gift bags at the Battlefords Union Hospital and Meadow Lake Hospital.
